The Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is seeking to recruit an exceptional academic physician and leader to serve as Chief, Emergency Care Service. The Division of Supportive and Acute Care services is comprised of four services including Emergency Care, General Internal Medicine, Hospital Medicine, and Supportive Care. The new Service Chief will report to the Head of the Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services and will have programmatic oversight and responsibility for the Service and faculty. The Service Chief will work to shape the strategic and programmatic priorities for the Service. S/he will oversee the clinical operations, talent acquisition and retention, research, philanthropy, professional development, mentorship, and teaching. Emergency Care Service:The Emergency Care Service provides specialized acute care services at the main campus and in the regional network for MSK patients suffering from cancer or the side effects of its treatment. At main campus in 2023, the Urgent Care Center saw close to 25,000 visits, resulting in approximately 12,000 admissions and 3,500 observation unit stays. The regional symptom care clinics have experienced year-over-year growth in patient volume with over 88,000 visits since 2019. The service is comprised of 30 physicians and 40 APPs distributed at main campus, in the regional network, and at our partner hospitals. MSK patients who present to the Urgent Care Center are, often, moderately or severely ill and need immediate care. Over 95% have an Emergency Severity Index (ESI) of 2 or 3 and are (by definition) unsafe to wait and/or need in-depth evaluation. The Urgent Care Center admission rate is triple that of an Emergency Department of similar volume (51% versus 16%) and even the Symptom Care Clinics have an admission rate over 20%. The Emergency Care Service faculty conduct ongoing research around ED utilization, care delivery, and optimal management of cancer-related emergencies. Faculty are leaders within the NCI-sponsored Comprehensive ONCologic Emergencies Research Network (CONCERN), an over 20-site network dedicated to research that bridges oncology and emergency medicine. At a minimum, qualified candidates should be physicians with board-certification in emergency medicine and: - National recognition as an emergency care program leader, educator, and/or a funded program of clinical, translational, or population science research. - Credentials warranting appointment as Associate or Full Member at Memorial Hospital with a joint appointment as Associate or Clinical Professor at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.- Extensive clinical expertise in emergency care, intensive care, or emergency oncology. - Eligible for licensure in New York State and New Jersey. Faculty from the Academic Oncology Service serve as pediatric oncologists with special expertise in managing cancer patients both in the inpatient and ambulatory care settings. They care for a range of patients, from patients receiving stem cell transplants and novel cellular therapies to children with relapsed cancer enrolled on clinical trials, and establish continuity of care among our cancer specialists and referring physicians. The Academic Oncology faculty serve as the key educators of pediatric residents and fellows and conduct important clinical research and quality and safety initiatives within the Department of Pediatrics. Academic Oncology faculty will have protected time for these academic pursuits. This search is open to potential candidates at all levels of career experience and appointments will be made at an academic level commensurate with the appointee’s experience. As a member of the Academic Oncology Service team you will have the responsibility for: ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES: - Direct patient care for pediatric general oncology. Clinical responsibilities include the following on a rotational basis: - Inpatient oncology service (days) – approximately 8 weeks of service - Stem cell transplant service (nights) – approximately 8 weeks of service - Primary care of outpatients in MSK regional sites in NY and NJ – approximately 8 weeks - Educational initiatives delivering curriculum on pediatric oncology for medical trainees (primarily residents) and licensed independent practitioners at all levels of practice in the department. - Protected time for academic pursuits based on candidate interests. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate interested in joining an NCI-funded research group focused on understanding the genetic architecture of breast cancer and identifying novel molecular biomarkers for gastrointestinal cancers. The postdoctoral fellow will be mentored by Dr. Xiang Shu for a period of two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year. There are three major ongoing research areas at Dr. Shu’s lab: 1) Metabolomics/proteomics studies of gastrointestinal cancer using prediagnostic blood samples or pre-cancer tissues; 2) Single cell omics and functional investigation to identify putative causal variants, susceptibility transcription factors, and genes underlying triple negative breast cancer; 3) Mendelian randomization analysis related to cancer etiology.
