    Job Description

We are seeking a candidate to join the Integrated Genomics Operation (IGO) as a Research Assistant.  IGO specializes in performing a variety of genomics technologies, almost exclusively in high throughput mode, and has a collection of sequencing platforms. IGO coordinates with multiple groups throughout MSKCC to provide investigators with a full range of genomic services.  Our process is fully inclusive: we assist investigators with phenotypic characterization of tissues and macro dissection of specimens, and extract DNA and RNA from a wide variety of sources (single cells, FFPE and fresh frozen sample, buccal swab, circulating free DNA, etc.) to support basic, translational and clinical research. Ultimately, the focus of our work is to help establish the basis of cancer pathogenesis, diagnostics and treatment at MSKCC. The candidate will work as part of the Sample Receiving Team, playing an integral role in investigator communication and standardization of all projects as they are processed within the Integrated Genomics Operation.

As a Research Assistant, you will:

    • Review complex projects as they are entering the lab, working to facilitate accessioning with junior team members, and ensuring accuracy of technical information.
    • Act as a subject-matter-expert in DNA and RNA QC review, including performing bench work when needed, updating SOP’s, and certifying instruments for optimal performance.
    • Utilize the LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) effectively to ensure the downstream processing team has relevant and up-to-date information.
    • Help the team supervisor oversee the process of shipment to or receipt from outside institutions and the use of liquid handling automation to aliquot nucleic acid materials.
    • Work closely with staff, both internal to, and external from IGO, and maintain open and proactive lines of communication.

    You are:

    • Someone who can handle a very fast paced environment and the pressure associated with deadlines.
    • An outstanding communicator and critical thinker.
    • A people person – able to adapt quickly to different personalities and cater to the needs of a diverse group of clinicians and researchers.
    • Enthusiastic about advancing cancer research through genomic sequencing.
    • A believer in the LEAN workplace.

    You have:

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological, Chemistry, or Science related field with at least 6 years of relevant full-time experience or a Master’s degree with 3years full-time relevant experience.
    • Extensive working knowledge of molecular biology, DNA/RNA QC techniques, NGS applications, and cancer biology is required.
    • Previous exposure to LIMS systems, Lean/Six-Sigma, GLP and Total Quality Management (TQM) is preferred. #LI-POST
