    Job Description

    The Clinical Data Specialist analyzes medical records; extracting surgical, pathological, therapeutic and epidemiologic data in accordance with established ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 AMA coding principles and guidelines.  They will ensure that data is optimally coded for research purposes, financial reimbursement, planning, statistics and regulatory reporting and communicate directly with Surgery Administration and Physicians to ensure that surgical documentation is coded in compliance with CMS guidelines and National Correct Coding Initiatives.

     

    The Clinical Data Specialist is responsible for: 

     Coding: 

    • Selects CPT codes at their highest level of specificity per documentation and research requirements 
    • Identifies appropriate principal diagnosis and applicable subsequent diagnoses adherent to specific surgical procedure
    •  Identifies correct/appropriate primary procedure, including any and all additional procedures
    •  Follows all coding guidelines as defined by NCCI and CMS regulations


    Follow Up: 

    • Follows status of OP Reports and Physical Presence Statements as outlined in the Surgical Coder –CDS Reference Guide 
    • Follows e-mail schedule as to Coding Approvals as noted in the Surgical Coder-CDS Reference Guide and Procedure E-mail Grid
    • Weekly follow-up on pending cases to ensure they are coded within timeframe specified in the Surgical Coder - CDS Reference Guide 
    • Appropriately escalates to management any cases that fall outside of the coding timeframe guidelines as defined in the Surgical Coder –CDS Reference Guide 

    Data Verification: 

    • Matches the correct medical record with corresponding case and verifies that information corresponds with the Operative Report and Pathology Report (if applicable) as documented in the Electronic Medical Record.
    • Enters coding information into the Surgical Coding Database 


    Research: 

    • Communicates new coding scenarios and procedure terminology to management as appropriate
    • Reviews and resolves coding rejections based on resource review when warranted
    • Researches specific coding scenarios upon management request.

     
    You Need:

    • 2-4 years of experience in surgical coding
    • Knowledge of CPT and ICD-10-CM coding, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
    • Experience in an automated healthcare coding environment is required
    • Bachelor's degree preferred
