    Job Description

    We Are:
    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 2 million patients admitted to acute-care hospitals in the United States each year acquire infections that were not related to the condition for which they were hospitalized. These infections result in about 100,000 deaths and add between $4.5 billion and $5.7 billion to patient care costs every year. Although the precise causes of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are difficult to identify, experts believe that about one-third could be prevented using current recommendations. The goal of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Infection Control program is to provide the safest healthcare environment for our patients by using existing guidelines to prevent HAIs and to engage in research to further the mission of infection prevention.

    You will:

    • Provide skills to support required activities to monitor and maintain Hospital Infection Control Program.
    • Review positive culture reports and enter data into specific databases for the infection control department ensuring that all entries are correct, accurate, and timely.
    • Review patients requiring isolation. Notify clinical staff if patient requires isolation and room change. Discontinue isolation precautions based on criteria and notify clinical staff.
    • Utilize appropriate methodologies to collect information for surveillance of infections as directed. Extract data from various hospital databases, microbiology laboratory, and from reviews searching for information determined by the infection control surveillance supervisor/manager.
    • Answer all calls from clinical staff related to isolation criteria and requirements; refers calls if necessary to the appropriate infection control practitioner. 
    • Report communicable diseases to appropriate Departments of Health. 
    • Conduct compliance audits at both inpatient and ambulatory sites as needed. Activities may include counting numbers of invasive catheters, hand hygiene episodes, number of soap/alcohol dispensers, and/or routine rounds to observe infection control compliance.
    • Report to supervisor/manager any detected clusters, outbreaks, or potential unsafe practices which could result in spread of infection or harm to patients/staff immediately. 
    • Report data and project results as needed to Hospital Infection Prevention and Control Committee using POWERPoint and other relevant audio/visual tools.
    • Coordinate preparation for special projects (i.e., ensures adequate supplies/materials for major communication efforts; distributes/arranges posters, etc.).

    You Have:

    • Bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred.
    • high school diploma is required.
    • Medical terminology and an interest in science
