    Job Description

    We are:
    As one of the world's premier cancer centers, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is committed to the progressive control and cure of cancer through programs of patient care, research and education. As such, our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department plays a vital role in supporting that mission through the implementation of programs that continuously strive to exceed and set industry standards as well as enhance the safety culture. EHS is responsible for Fire and Life Safety, Emergency Management, Construction Safety, Hazardous Material and Waste Management, Laboratory Safety, Occupational Safety, Healthcare Safety, Environmental Compliance and Ergonomics. MSK is seeking a proven leader who can be part of a dynamic and growing organization.


    You will:

    • Manage and promote the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) fire safety and prevention programs for all buildings occupied by MSK personnel, patients and visitors.
    • Serve as the technical expert and program team leader, conduct compliance and risk assessments, and develop and implement policies and procedures to comply with fire safety regulatory requirements.
    • Be responsible for the day­to­day management of the fire safety programs including the ability to assess current programs to identify new performance goals, strategies, and metrics.
    • Supervise fire safety staff and works closely with other EHS staff, Security, service departments, and clinical/laboratory/administrative personnel related to the implementation of EHS programs and services.
    • Identify and evaluate potential fire producing conditions and practices.
    • Develop and implement control methods, procedures and programs to eliminate or reduce the likelihood of a loss.
    • Review fire code requirements from multiple agencies, including FDNY, Joint Commission, NYS Department of Health, and CMS.

    You have:

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Safety or Fire Science. Those enrolled in a fire science or related BS program will be considered.
    • 7 – 10 years of experience in fire/safety, teaching experience in a classroom setting, performing fire and safety inspections.
    • Ability to obtain licenses (FDNY Certificates of Fitness) such as: a. Fire Drills b. Standpipe c. Sprinkler d. Fire Safety Director e. Emergency Action Plan Director.
    • Strong working knowledge of federal, state and local fire safety regulations and relevant codes, including FDNY, Joint Commission, CMS, and NYS Department of Health requirements.
    • Ability to act decisively when responding to emergency situations.
    • Strong working knowledge of position requirements and demonstrated ability to organize, track, and prioritize work responsibilities and regulatory deadlines.
    • Capability of working independently and as a team member to develop and implement programs with EHS staff and MSK departments.
    • Skill in assessing and implementing fire safety compliance programs and working with a diverse clientele of facility managers and building occupants.
    • Demonstrated leadership in developing and managing position requirements including the ability to supervise and motivate staff and develop performance measures to maximize productivity and work quality.
    • Highly service oriented with good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills including the ability to develop and deliver concise documentation, presentations and trainings. Ability to organize and lead effective meetings.
    • Competency in the use of computers, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and email/Internet programs. Ability to develop complex MS Excel spreadsheets to track and organize multiple operational activities including the integration of multiple data sources; use of statistical calculations and formulas; and develop operational reports.
