Assistant to Chair, Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP)
The Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) was founded by Dr. Charles Sawyers in 2006 to address the challenges presented by cancer research in the era of targeted therapies. By bringing together researchers in many disciplines, HOPP’s goal is to advance scientific knowledge while bridging discoveries made in the laboratory with those made in the clinic. The department has grown to a faculty of nearly 20 physician-scientists, each with independent laboratories and research aims, and approximately 300 research and administrative staff. As the Chair of HOPP, Dr. Sawyers oversees all aspects of the department’s research, financial, and administrative operations as well as manages his own independent research laboratory.
The HOPP administrative team is seeking a resourceful, customer-service-oriented, administrative professional to provide executive level support to the Department Chair, Dr. Charles Sawyers. A successful candidate will be able to effectively function in a dynamic, highly visible setting. The candidate must demonstrate sound judgment, independent decision making ability, thoroughness, attention to detail, and initiative. The candidate will possess effective time management, organization, and prioritization skills and be able to leverage a broad spectrum of written and verbal communication skills to meet the diverse range of administrative and operational needs of the Chair.
The Assistant will partner with the Department’s Chair, Administrator and the administrative management team to coordinate, organize and prioritize the functions and activities of the office. Critical attributes and responsibilities of the position include: extensive calendar and travel management; screening and prioritizing requests for the Chair; meeting planning and coordination; clerical duties and processing administrative paperwork; and assisting with the preparation of various documents including letters, grant applications, biosketches, CVs, and presentations. The incumbent will also provide administrative support to the Chair’s laboratory staff, including: arranging meetings and travel, processing reimbursements, onboarding new lab members, and other personnel related responsibilities. The incumbent may participate in larger departmental initiatives or special projects as well, depending on time and availability.
