Job Description

As a member of the Design Innovation Group, the Design Associate collaborates as a team member on Design Innovation projects, under the direction of the Creative Lead, Design Innovation Group and Design Strategy and Innovation Head, Strategy and and Innovation. Contributes to the development and implementation of innovative design solutions that address institutional strategic objectives through the design of spaces, services, communications and operational processes from inception through idea prototyping and translation to implementation. Contributes to ongoing efforts to promote the culture of innovation among frontline staff and throughout the institution.


You Will: 

  • Create fieldwork guides and conduct fieldwork with patients and staff on- and off-site.
  • Design, create, and facilitate cross-departmental workshops. Create materials for use in workshops including graphics and models.
  • Analyze data in collaboration with other team members. Develop frameworks, models, maps, etc. where appropriate.
  • Support selected design projects through all activities, including problem framing, planning, research, analysis, synthesis, ideation, prototyping, and translation to implementation.
  • Provide input into development of project plans and timelines. Coordinate project logistics such as scheduling and communication. Help to complete project reports, presentations, documentation to track project status and pending/future tasks.
  • Collaborate on direction of Design Innovation Group by developing vision, purpose, and objectives together with S&I leadership and design group.
  • Attend and participate in key design conferences providing external exposure for the work of the design innovation group and MSKCC.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the changes in design methodology, healthcare, and related industries. Participate in organization-wide committees.


You Have: 
  • A Bachelor's Degree is required; Master's preferred
  • experience in a consultative design or innovation practice, with proven ability to:

    1. Employ human-centered design methodology and practice
    2. Deliver human-centered, innovative, and implementable design concepts
    3. Collaborate effectively with designers and multi-disciplinary teams
    4. Manage multiple projects 
  • Human-centered design methodology
  • Fluency with core design methods such as design research, sketching, storyboarding, diagramming, prototyping
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Collaborative process and team-building; proficient in Graphic and Communication Design software (ideally Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator and InDesign)
  • Group Facilitation skills are a plus.
